Sex sells, that’s the saying anyway, and when it comes to Halloween costumes it seems to be the trend, but how sexy is too sexy for children’s costumes?
Halloween is supposed to be scary, frightening and gory, but these parents were shocked by something else.
“I’d be embarrassed if my wife wore this, much less my daughter,” said Martin Chavarria.
“If it’s not appropriate for school I don’t think they should be walking around the neighborhood with it,” said Patrick Roberson.
The costumes that are available for young girls, ages 9 through 12 also known as ‘Tweens’, are sold in stores and online are often provocative.
“They say tween, but it looks like it’s for someone 17 or 18 years old I think,” said Kimberley Stambler, a mother of one.
“It’s extremely impressionable, you start to think that that’s what women should wear and do wear, and so you grow up with the idea that to be sexy and have men like you, that’s what you wear,” said Jordan Torres.
“Plus it ruins the whole concept of Halloween itself, now it’s turned into a beauty contest,” Roberson said.
“I remember dressing up as a vampire, my sister was a ghost, there’s nothing sexy about that.”
“They shouldn’t be dressing like they’re out looking for dates at that age,” said Karen Carr.
The stores are not usually in control of what manufacturers make available and many of the parents I spoke with suggest going with your child to help pick out the costume, that way there are no surprises come Halloween night.
